When Philadelphia hosted the FIFA World Cup 26™, Wilmington offered visitors a nearby place to stay, eat, and enjoy the tournament while staying close to the matches.

Wilmington’s location and connections made it a natural fit for this role. The city is about 30 minutes from Philadelphia by car, and Amtrak and SEPTA offer direct train service. For visitors looking to save money during a big event, Wilmington offered a close, affordable option.

Organizers expected over 500,000 visitors to come to Pennsylvania for the World Cup, bringing an estimated $770 million boost to the economy. This activity created chances for the whole region, including places outside Philadelphia that could welcome guests.

Wilmington Added Its Own World Cup Experience

Wilmington offered more than just a place to stay during the tournament. Local businesses got involved and helped create a true World Cup experience.

The City of Wilmington partnered with 19 local restaurants to host World Cup watch parties from June 11 through July 19. Participating locations dedicated at least four screens to matches and offered promotions and other activities throughout the tournament.

This gave visitors more reasons to spend time in Wilmington before or after heading to Philadelphia. It also let residents join a global event without leaving their city.

Visitors who chose Wilmington as their base enjoyed:

  • Easy access to Philadelphia by I-95, Amtrak, and SEPTA
  • Hotel options outside Philadelphia’s higher-demand market
  • Tax-free shopping, dining and entertainment in Delaware
  • Local restaurants and businesses participating in World Cup activities
  • Access to Wilmington’s Riverfront and Brandywine Valley attractions

Affordability Made Wilmington Part of the Regional Strategy

Big events can tighten hotels, transportation, and budgets. For travelers in the Philadelphia area, Wilmington gave another choice.

Greater Wilmington’s tourism organization positioned the area as a basecamp for Philadelphia’s major 2026 events, citing hotel value, availability and transportation connections. With hotel rates varying by property and demand, staying outside Philadelphia can give visitors more choices when demand rises around major events.
